The fast rule
For much of the Gregorian year, Vikram Samvat is about 57 years ahead. Around the early-year / spring New Year boundary, the difference can be 56 years instead.
- May–December: AD + 57 is a good year-level guide.
- January–February: AD + 56 is usually the safer year-level guide.
- March–April: treat it as a boundary period and verify the exact tradition/Panchang.

Gregorian is solar; Vikram Samvat is traditionally lunisolar
Gregorian calendar
Built around the solar year. Months have fixed conventional lengths and leap-year rules keep the civil calendar aligned with the seasons.
Vikram Samvat
Indian religious usage is traditionally lunisolar: lunar months, paksha and tithi interact with the solar year. Intercalary adjustment keeps the lunar cycle connected to the seasons.
Tithi is not a civil day
A tithi is based on the angular relationship of the Sun and Moon. It can begin or end at any clock time, so one Gregorian date can contain parts of two tithis.
Region matters
North India commonly uses Purnimanta month naming, while many western and southern traditions use Amanta. Nepal uses a solar civil Bikram Sambat system.

What Vikram Samvat year is 2026?
For most of 2026 after the spring New Year boundary, it is Vikram Samvat 2083. Earlier in the year, the corresponding Samvat year is 2082.
Can I convert a Vikram Samvat date by subtracting 57?
Only as a rough year-level shortcut. An exact lunar month, paksha and tithi conversion needs a Panchang or astronomical calendar calculation.
Why do two Hindu calendars sometimes show different month names?
Regional month conventions differ. In particular, Purnimanta and Amanta systems attach the waning fortnight to month names differently.
Is Vikram Samvat the same as Shaka Samvat?
No. They are different eras with different year numbering. India's National Calendar uses the Shaka era, while Vikram Samvat has an earlier epoch.
Why is this especially useful in Varanasi?
Kashi's ritual life is strongly tied to lunar months and tithis: Sawan, Kartik, Purnima, Amavasya, Ekadashi, Shivaratri and numerous yatras cannot be understood well from Gregorian dates alone.
