Festivals and Occasions in Varanasi
An interactive calendar of processions, river rituals, music, Ramlila, Buddhist observances and nights when the ghats become a world of flame.
In Varanasi, a festival rarely remains inside a temple. It enters the lane, moves towards the Ganga, becomes music on a ghat, a procession beneath balconies, a Ramlila across an entire town, or a million small flames reflected in the river.

Six occasions worth planning a journey around
Maha Shivaratri
Kashi’s identity as the city of Shiva becomes visible through all-night darshan, bells, abhishek, fasting and the exuberant Shiv Barat. This is devotion, theatre and civic celebration at once.

After the austerity of Shivaratri comes colour. Tradition celebrates Shiva returning to Kashi with Parvati, and the Vishwanath precinct fills with gulal, flowers, songs and the feeling that Holi has formally entered the city.

At the landscape of the First Sermon, the mood changes from processional energy to chanting, meditation, lamps and international Buddhist fellowship. Dhamek Stupa and Mulagandha Kuti Vihara are central points.

This is not a play watched from one seat. Audiences move across Ramnagar with the action as an entire landscape becomes Ayodhya, Janakpur, forest and Lanka. Allow several evenings—or build a journey around one important episode.

Devotees stand at the river’s edge with baskets of fruit and offerings, honouring the setting sun and returning before dawn to greet the rising sun. The openness of Assi and other broad ghats helps visitors observe respectfully.

On Kartik Purnima, lamp after lamp redraws the architecture of the riverfront. The most memorable view is often the broad sweep of illuminated ghats rather than one famous ceremony. Plan transport, walking exit and accommodation well ahead.

How to plan responsibly
| Occasion | How early to plan | Essential caution |
|---|---|---|
| Maha Shivaratri | Accommodation 4–8 weeks ahead | Old-city access changes; expect long queues and night crowds. |
| Ramnagar Ramlila | Confirm the episode and location first | The performance moves; one map pin cannot represent the whole event. |
| Chhath | Arrive before sunset and before dawn | Do not obstruct worshippers or photograph faces intrusively. |
| Dev Deepawali | Hotel and transport 6–10 weeks ahead | Do not rely on an unlicensed boat or an unverified online package. |
| Monsoon occasions | Check on the same day | Flood levels can close lower steps and relocate aarti. |
