Vivekananda and Varanasi

Monkeys by Durga Kund, masters beside the Ganga, a yogi in Ghazipur—and a final Kashi visit that turned spiritual insight into organized service.

“Face the brutes!” became more than advice on a road in Kashi. It became a compact philosophy of courage.

Varanasi was not a decorative backdrop in Vivekananda’s life. It was a testing ground: a city where the young wandering monk met scholars and ascetics, confronted fear in a now-famous episode, and later returned as a world teacher. The story then flows east along the Ganga to Ghazipur, where his encounter with Pavhari Baba sharpened his understanding of Yoga, discipline and loyalty to his own guru.

Kashi before the famous monk

Long before Chicago made “Vivekananda” a world-famous name, Kashi had already entered Narendra’s imagination.

Family memory

A prayer to Vireshwar Shiva

Tradition preserved by the Ramakrishna Mission records that his mother, Bhubaneswari Devi, arranged worship at Varanasi’s Vireshwar Shiva temple while praying for a son. This link made Kashi part of his sacred family story even before his birth in 1863.

First wandering years

Kashi as a university of life

After Sri Ramakrishna’s passing, the young monk came to Varanasi during his travels. Here, scripture was not only discussed in libraries: renunciation walked through lanes, philosophy lived on ghats, and death itself was treated as a teacher.

Encounters

Saints and scholars

Accounts associate him with the famed ascetics Trailanga Swami and Bhaskarananda and with Sanskrit scholar Pramada Das Mitra, whose hospitality and correspondence offered an important intellectual companionship.

Durga Kund: the day fear turned around

Near Durga Kund, on the road from the Sankat Mochan side, a troop of monkeys began to follow and then chase the young monk. He quickened his pace; the monkeys became bolder. An elderly sannyasin called out words to the effect of: “Don’t run—face the brutes!” Vivekananda stopped, turned and stood firm. The animals retreated.

Why the episode endured: Vivekananda later used it as a universal lesson. What pursues us often gains power from retreat; courage does not guarantee the disappearance of difficulty, but it changes our relationship with it.

What is securely located?

The Ramakrishna Mission Home of Service places the incident near Durga Kunda, coming from Sankat Mochan. It should therefore be understood as an episode in the Durga Kund precinct—not necessarily at one demonstrable paving stone.

A traveller’s reading

Pause beside the kund, look toward the temple and imagine the older, greener road. The location makes the lesson tangible, but the most respectful memorial is inward: name one fear and face it deliberately.

Temple etiquette

Dress modestly, do not feed or tease monkeys, protect glasses and loose food, and follow current photography instructions. Durga Mandir is a living shrine, not merely a heritage stop.

Ghazipur: Yoga, Pavhari Baba and an unmade initiation

The Ghazipur chapter is subtler—and more interesting—than the easy sentence “he learned Yoga there.”

In January 1890, Vivekananda travelled to Ghazipur to meet Pavhari Baba, the reclusive “air-eating” saint known for devotion, yogic austerity and an underground hermitage near the Ganga. Vivekananda admired him deeply and stayed nearby. His letters call Pavhari Baba a remarkable embodiment of bhakti and Yoga.

Vivekananda hoped the yogi might teach him Hatha Yoga practices to strengthen a body troubled by illness. Traditional biographies say an initiation was contemplated, but visions or memories of Sri Ramakrishna caused him to abandon the plan. Thus Ghazipur was a profound encounter with a yogi and a serious intention to learn—not evidence that he completed a new formal yogic discipleship.

The honest formulation: “At Ghazipur, Vivekananda lived near Pavhari Baba, sought his guidance and considered learning Hatha Yoga from him; he ultimately remained spiritually loyal to Sri Ramakrishna and did not take the contemplated initiation.”

A Kashi–Ghazipur timeline

BEFORE 1863

Bhubaneswari Devi’s prayer

Family tradition links the prayer for Narendra’s birth with worship of Vireshwar Shiva in Varanasi.

1888

The wandering monk reaches Varanasi

Kashi becomes one of the first great stations of his travels. He meets spiritual figures and the scholar Pramada Das Mitra; the Durga Kund monkey episode belongs to these early wandering years.

JANUARY–MARCH 1890

Ghazipur and Pavhari Baba

He seeks out the secluded yogi, stays close to the hermitage, praises his spiritual power and considers Hatha Yoga instruction, but does not complete the contemplated initiation.

1893–1901

The message travels worldwide

Chicago, lecture tours, books on Yoga and Vedanta, and the founding of the Ramakrishna Mission transform the unknown traveller into a global voice.

EARLY 1902

Final return to Kashi

In poor health, Vivekananda stays for several weeks at Gopal Lal Villa, also called Sandhyabas, associated with the present LT College/College of Teacher Education precinct near Orderly Bazaar.

1902 AND AFTER

Service and Advaita take institutional form

He encourages the young men serving Kashi’s sick and destitute and supports the establishment of an Advaita centre. The Home of Service and Advaita Ashrama carry that impulse forward in Luxa.

From inward courage to public service

Luxa

Ramakrishna Mission Home of Service

A hospital and service institution shaped by Vivekananda’s ideal that serving the human being is worship. Locally it is also known as Kaudiya Hospital. It is in Luxa—convenient to Godowlia, but not literally at Godowlia crossing.

Luxa

Ramakrishna Advaita Ashrama

Established by Swami Shivananda, a direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna, at Vivekananda’s bidding. The official centre gives its address as D 45/6, Luxa.

Gopal Lal Villa memory

His final Varanasi residence stood in a garden estate remembered as Gopal Lal Villa or Sandhyabas. Surviving remains have been associated with the LT College/College of Teacher Education grounds; access and conservation status may change.

Location clarity: Godowlia is the familiar visitor landmark; the Ramakrishna centres lie farther west in Luxa/Ramapura. Depending on traffic, they are a short e-rickshaw ride or a purposeful walk from Godowlia. Always use the individual map pin rather than asking only for “Ramakrishna Mission.”

A Vivekananda heritage trail in Varanasi

A thoughtful one-day route, built around ideas rather than a race for check-ins.

1. Sunrise at the Ganga

Begin at Assi Ghat or another quieter southern ghat. Read a short passage from Karma Yoga or Raja Yoga and watch the city become active.

Suggested time: 6:00–7:00 am · Allow seasonal variation.

2. Sankat Mochan precinct

Visit respectfully, then take the short onward route toward Durga Kund. Security rules may restrict phones and bags.

6. Godowlia to the old city

Continue toward Kashi Vishwanath and the river only if energy, access arrangements and crowds permit. The city’s central question—how the timeless meets daily struggle—is also Vivekananda’s question.

Luxa–Godowlia route ↗

Plan the journey well

Experience Time needed Best approach Watch for
Durga Kund + Sankat Mochan 1.5–2.5 hours Early morning; walk or short e-rickshaw hops Monkeys, temple security, festival queues
Luxa centres 1–2 hours Confirm current visiting hours first Hospital privacy; worship schedules
Old-city reflection walk 2–4 hours On foot with a knowledgeable local guide Crowds, uneven lanes, controlled temple entry
Gopal Lal Villa area 30–60 minutes Research stop; verify access locally Not a conventional tourist monument
Ghazipur extension Full day Private car/taxi; daylight travel Confirm ashram pin, access and road time
Suggested two-day plan: Day 1—Ganga, Sankat Mochan, Durga Kund, Luxa and Godowlia. Day 2—early drive to Ghazipur for the Pavhari Baba landscape, returning before dark. The second day is best for readers who want the deeper biographical thread rather than only city highlights.

Three ideas to carry home

Courage

Turn toward the difficulty

The Durga Kund memory is not a promise of easy victory. It is training in steadiness: stop feeding fear through automatic flight.

Discernment

Learn widely, remain centred

Ghazipur reveals intellectual humility. Vivekananda could revere Pavhari Baba, explore another yogic path, and still recognize where his deepest spiritual allegiance lay.

Service

Make philosophy useful

Luxa completes the arc. Vedanta moves out of debate and into hospital wards: dignity, care and work become forms of worship.

Frequently asked questions

Did the monkey incident happen inside Durga Temple?

The Mission’s Varanasi account places it near Durga Kund while he was coming from the Sankat Mochan side. It is safer to describe the broader precinct than claim an exact spot inside the temple.

Did Vivekananda learn Yoga in Ghazipur?

He met Pavhari Baba, stayed nearby, valued him as a yogi and considered learning Hatha Yoga to strengthen his health. Traditional accounts say he did not proceed with the contemplated initiation. Ghazipur influenced his yogic thought, but “completed formal training there” is too strong.

Is Ramakrishna Mission at Godowlia?

The key institutions are in Luxa, west of Godowlia. Godowlia is a useful central landmark, but use the exact map pins for Ramakrishna Mission Home of Service and Ramakrishna Advaita Ashrama.

Can tourists enter the Home of Service?

It is an active hospital and service campus, not a sightseeing attraction. Check current visitor policy, keep quiet, respect patient privacy and never photograph patients without explicit permission.

Can all places be visited in one day?

The Varanasi sites can form one long day. Ghazipur deserves a separate day because of driving time and the need to confirm local access.

Responsible history note: the exact spot of a remembered incident, the present condition of Gopal Lal Villa remains, and visitor access can be uncertain. This guide avoids presenting inference as archaeological proof.

Varanasi is best understood slowly.
Walk gently, verify living traditions, support responsible local businesses and leave sacred places quieter than you found them.
